CONGRATS TO "DEVIL IS BUSY" - Nominated for Oscar!

We extend a hearty CONGRATULATIONS to Christalyn Hampton and team for their nomination in the Best Documentary Short Film category, for the Devil is Busy .  Christalyn screened her film for us for the January 2026 DocuQuarium get together, also bringing Tracii, featured in the film. We had a lively discussion about how the film was planned and shot in collaboration with the Feminist Center for Reproductive Liberation , the subject of the film. Featured: Christalyn Hampton and guest Tracii (on left) with moderator Brad Lichtenstein. Attendees thanked the filmmaker and Tracii for their amazing work.  Have we started a new finger-crossing ritual for Atlanta-based Oscar nominees? Present to DocuQuarium and ...? Brad Lichtenstein's PBS Film, "American Reckoning"

At this month’s roundtable meeting in May 2025, filmmaker Brad Lichtenstein gave us a powerful behind-the-scenes look at American Reckoning , his PBS documentary co-directed with Yoruba Richen . The film takes a hard, honest look at the 1967 murder of Wharlest Jackson Sr.—a Black civil rights leader in Natchez, Mississippi—and the deep-rooted racial violence still haunting America. Lichtenstein didn’t hold back, diving into the haunting legacy of white denial and why confronting it matters more than ever. The documentary shines thanks to rare footage and heartfelt stories from Jackson’s family, especially his wife, Exerlena, whose personal home videos bring emotional weight and humanity to the screen. We also learned about the Deacons for Defense and Justice (yes, an armed Black resistance group you probably didn’t hear about in school!) and the fearless journalism of Stanley Nelson, who connected Jackson’s death to a KKK splinter group. Yet, chillingly, the case remains unsolved—a...

Third Thursdays with Documentary Dreamers: A Gathering of Grit and Grace

There’s something quietly powerful about a circle of storytellers gathering with nothing more than passion, questions, and a love for the truth. That’s exactly what’s happening every third Thursday of the month, when a vibrant group of documentary filmmakers comes together—not in search of perfection, but to connect, collaborate, and be inspired. It’s not flashy. It’s not exclusive. It’s just real people, telling real stories, building something bigger than themselves. Meeting #3: Mark Mori & the Battle for Workers’ Rights In our first gathering, we had the privilege of spotlighting Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Mark Mori , a veteran with over 30 years in the documentary world. Mark shared insights from his latest project, The Baristas vs the Billionaires , a gripping and timely film that captures the rise of Starbucks Workers United (SWU) and their David-and-Goliath battle against billionaire CEO Howard Schultz ’s aggressive anti-union campaign. With raw fo...

Atlanta Indie Media + DocuQuarium

Hello! Atlanta Indie Media  is a start-up group for independent media makers. The group was seeded with a list of local members of the International Documentary Association (IDA), but is growing as more Atlanta media makers join, wanting to connect and move their projects forward.    Our group features indie media makers in documentary, cross-media/digital formats, vlogs, podcasts, and interactive media.  Some folks are taking an active role in organizing the group. Our first activity to hold monthly meetings, titled  DocuQuarium , on the third Thursday of each month, at a location at near downtown Decatur.*  We've had two meetings in 2025. In January, we screened Clay Walker's Post No Bills , which showed at Sundance, with themes that remain timely today. We had a great discussion with a master who gave us insights as to how he created this important film. In February, we hosted Anjanette Levert, who showed her remarkable film, The Only Doctor . It's been ...
